Sustainable energy includes all forms of energy generation and utilization that can support both the present and future needs of the planet without paying prohibitively high social, fiscal, and environmental costs. While many challenges face humanity in the twenty-first century, ranging from poverty to terrorism to disease to a shortage of clean water), energy ranks highest on the list in many people’s estimation, because of the fact that abundant and cheap sources of energy can make major inroads into solving most or all of these other challenges.
